Pricing guides for UK businesses
Website Costs Explained
Website costs in the UK vary more than almost any other business purchase. Two quotes for what sounds like the same website can differ by thousands of pounds, and monthly plans make comparisons even harder. These guides explain typical price ranges, what actually drives the cost and the ongoing costs people often forget, so you can budget properly and compare quotes fairly.
Typical UK website price ranges
The ranges below are the typical UK market figures we use in our own cost calculator. They're broad because scope varies so much, but they give a realistic starting point.
| Type of website | Freelancer | Agency |
|---|---|---|
| Brochure or lead-generation site | £500–£3,000 | £2,500–£8,000 |
| E-commerce site | £2,000–£6,000 | £5,000–£20,000 |
| Ongoing hosting, maintenance and support | £30–£150 a month | £30–£150 a month |
One-off or monthly?
A one-off build means a larger payment up front, then separate costs for hosting and maintenance. A pay-monthly plan spreads the build cost and usually bundles hosting, updates and support into one fee. Neither is automatically cheaper; the right choice depends on cash flow, how much support you want and the contract terms.
What drives the price
The biggest factors are the number of pages, whether the design is bespoke or template-based, e-commerce and the number of products, features such as booking or membership areas, integrations with other systems and whether copywriting is included. Rushed timescales usually cost more too.

A website redesign usually costs less than a brand-new build when content and structure can be reused, and more when it involves a platform change or a large migration.

Your questions, answered.
Why do website quotes vary so much?+
Mainly scope: page count, custom design, copywriting, features, integrations and the level of support after launch. Compare quotes line by line rather than on price alone.
Is a cheap website a false economy?+
Not always. A simple, well-built site at a low price can work well. Problems arise when cheap sites lack security updates, local SEO or anyone to fix things when they break.
