Perfect bound book printing
Perfect bound books have their pages glued into a wraparound cover at the spine — the same binding used for paperbacks. The square spine can be printed with a title, so the book stands out on a shelf and feels substantial in the hand.

What is perfect binding used for?
It's used when a document needs to look and feel like a book.
- Product catalogues and trade price books
- Annual reports and corporate brochures
- Lookbooks and photography books
- Self-published books, cookbooks and memoirs
- Training manuals and course books
How is a perfect bound book made?
The inner pages are printed, gathered in order and roughed at the spine edge, then glued into a heavier cover that wraps around them. The book is trimmed on three sides for clean edges.
What should you know about designing for perfect binding?
Spine width depends on page count and paper thickness, so we calculate it before finalising the cover. Content near the spine needs a wider inner margin because a glued book doesn't open completely flat.

Your questions, answered.
How many pages do I need for perfect binding?
Perfect binding needs enough pages to form a spine that the glue can hold. We'll confirm whether your page count suits perfect binding when you send your brief.
Can the spine have text on it?
Yes, as long as the spine is wide enough. We'll calculate the width and set the title to fit.
Does a perfect bound book lie flat?
Not fully. If readers need to keep it open hands-free, wiro binding is the better option.
Need your book to lie flat?
Glued spines spring closed. For manuals, recipe books and workbooks used open on a desk, a wire binding opens flat and even folds back on itself.
